Streuvels “De vlaschaard”

Cover and illustrations of the 1907 deluxe edition, limited to 250 numbered copies.

Stijn Streuvels’ “De vlaschaard” is one of the most beautiful 20th century novels in the Flemish-Dutch language, set on a farm in the Flemish countryside.
After the first edition of 1907, published by the Amsterdam based firm of L.J. Veen, a limited deluxe edition was published the same year, this time, however, embellished with four colour drawings by Emmanuel Vièrin at the beginning of each of the four parts, which are titled respectively:
– De zaaiheide
– De wiedsters
– Bloei
– De slijting

Acquired from Van de Wiele Auctions, their sale of 10 October 2025, lot nr. 683.

On the occasion of the printing of the 200.000th copy in 1943 a memorial edition was published the next year by Drukkerij-Uitgeverij J. Lannoo, Tielt & N.V. Standaard Boekhandel, Antwerp, numbered 200.001 ~ 201.000. It was signed by the author and illustrated with four drawings by Albert Saverijs.
Quite obviously these drawings were made in a totally different era.

Acquired from Van de Wiele Auctions, their sale of 19 March 2022, lot nr. 615.
