The spine divided in six compartments by five raised bands with the gilt titles in the second compartment and the other compartments decorated in blind, endpapers marbled, armorial bookplate on front pastedown. Illustrated with twenty-two woodcuts in the text, of which one full page with a blank reverse side, plus seven magnificent duo-tone lithographs h.t. by Jules Laurens, as well as a chromolithographed folding map of the area.

Svaneti is situated in the South-West of the Caucasus in nowadays Georgia. The area was quite unexplored when M. Bernoville explored the area in the early seventies of the nineteenth century during a two years’ period. After his return in 1873 he prepared this book, which was published for the first (and the last) time in 1875.
In the proceedings of the sessions of the Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres of June 4th 1875 there appeared the following presentation: 1}
M. Jourdain offre à l’Académie, de la part de M. Raphaël Bernoville, un volume intitulé: La Souanétie libre, épisode d’un voyage à la chaîne centrale du Caucase (Paris, 1875, in-4°).
La Souanétie, dit-il, est une contrée située au sud-ouest du Caucase. C’est un pays à peu près inexploré jusqu’à ce jour; ni sa géographie ni son histoire ne sont connues. Il y avait quelque mérite de la part d’un jeune homme à s’aventurer dans ces régions ignorées, qui ne sont pas un désert sans doute, car on y trouve un grand nombre de villes, mais dans lesquelles bien peu de voyageurs ont pénétré. L’ouvrage de M. Bernoville, si un sentiment bien naturel d’estime de nous abuse, ajoute d’importantes données à la géographie régions caucasiques; il est d’ailleurs accompagné d’une carte dresséee d’après celle de l’état-major russe. Enfin, cet ouvrage est magnifiquement imprimé et contient un certain nombre de planches lithographiques représentatnt les sites les plus curieux. A tous ces titres il nous paraît mériter la plus sérieuse attention de l’Académie.
Bernoville was born into a prominent family of wealthy textile industrialists and merchants. Because of his wealth he could spend two continuous years exploring the remote Caucasus mountains and then fund the production of La Souanétie libre: an expensive, large-format work, paper size 365 x 280 mm, illustrated with fine lithographs, created by the well-known French landscape painter Jules Laurens after the drawings Bernoville had made on the spot.
